Stop The Long Term Effects Of Bullying Now You’re An Adult

Most adults that I work with sadly have experienced bullying in one form or another when they were a child.

This bullying is often dismissed or overlooked when we become an adult as something that happens to all children or is in the past now and a long time ago.

There are many different types of bullying that can be experienced by children and adults alike, some are obvious like physical and verbal bullying, while others can be more subtle like social bullying (spreading rumours, mimicking and excluding someone) and cyber bullying where the bully continues to bully through texts, emails and on online platforms.

Have you ever heard this phrase? ... 'Sticks and Stones May Break Your Bones, But Words Can Never Harm You'

This couldn’t be further from the truth as bones can heal over time but words can last a lifetime in our minds and can have a longterm effect on our emotional and psychological well being.

They can literally change how we view ourselves and the world around us. Bullying in all forms makes us doubt ourselves and question why it is happening to us which undoubtedly undermines our sense of ‘self’.

Bullying doesn’t just happen at school though and can happen absolutely anywhere that there are people. In addition to this, bullying behaviour is not only limited to children and young adults. Bullying can happen at university, in the home, in the neighbourhood, on public transport or in the workplace.

Unfortunately the mind isn’t as straight forward and logical as we think and even though the bullying may have been years ago the effects it had on you continue as the mind now has a ‘blue print’ to protect you from the trauma of it happening again.

This means we continue to suffer with the low self esteem and confidence caused at this time and the damaging and lasting psychological effects which can often cause amongst other things anxiety and depression.

Because our minds don’t know when we become an adult and gain distance from the bullying or knowledge of the abilities we now have to protect from the bullying the negative cycle still continues.

I work with people daily teaching them how to ‘process’ the bullying and finally be free from the effects so the bulling finally stops.
